A native of Australia, Ray played on the tour from 1964-79, winning 12 singles and 20 doubles titles, and was a member of the Australian Davis Cup team in 1968-70 and 1977. He reached the singles semifinals at the Australian Open three times (1968, 1969 and 1976) and won the 1977 Australian Open doubles with Alan Stone. Ray also reached the mixed doubles final at Wimbledon and the US Open with Billie Jean King in 1978.
