TED EPSTEIN AT THE QUINTUPLE IRONMAN TRIATHLON

(Excerpt from “Ted Epstein, Jr.  – The Life and Amazing Accomplishments of Ted Epstein, Jr.” by Vivian Sheldon Epstein)

October 9-13, 1991

In Den Haage (The Hague) Netherlands, the first Quintuple Ironman was held. Having been in The Netherlands during the European Ironman, Ted Epstein had befriended people who wanted to serve as his volunteer crew for this event.  In 1987, two of these volunteers had traveled to the U.S. to visit Ted in Denver.   Unfortunately, just as Vivian Epstein had planned to take them to Colorado Springs for the day, Vivian was told that her father had died.  Ina Cherington, a good friend, took them sightseeing instead.  When the same volunteers visited again in 1989 to be hosted by Ted and Vivian, Ted’s brother Fred had just died.  The volunteers were on their own.

The volunteers were very helpful during the swim and biking events.  Then the rains came.  During the run, each time Ted circled the race course, he became slower.  His thoroughly wet shoes helped to create large blisters on Ted’s feet.  He was hypothermic from the cold.  The race directors made a decision.  They did not want to have bad publicity for this first ever Quintuple Ironman with a dying or dead participant.  On the huge blackboard bearing the participants names, they struck a line through Ted’s name and declared him OUT OF THE RACE.  Ted refused to quit and continued circling the course.  The crying, exhausted volunteers came to Vivian’s hotel room at 2:00 A.M. and asked her help to stop Ted from running.  Vivian dressed and came to the course.  She too could not dissuade Ted from running.  The volunteers threatened to quit if Ted did not stop.  They quit and Ted continued.

Three other people then volunteered to help Ted.  At daybreak, still in the pouring rain, Vivian took Ted’s second pair of soggy running shoes to a nearby hotel and asked if she could please use a hair dryer for the shoes.  The hotel directed her to a room and Vivian used the hair dryer until the motor overheated.

The race directors re-instated Ted, who they could see was not going to stop.  The new volunteers knew that with 30 minutes to go, Ted would not make the time limit for the end of the race unless he added 20 seconds to each lap.  With extreme effort, Ted increased his pace, and finally became an official finisher with one minute to spare.  Great clapping and shouting erupted.

Daily onlookers watched the race, including a man in a white chef’s apron walking his dog.  He had noticed Ted’s exclusion and then inclusion back into the race.  After the event, the man approached Vivian and said he had never seen such an example of courage and determination.  Henk Savelberg said he was the owner of the finest hotel in Den Haage, Vreugd en Rust, a Relais and Chateau property.  He invited Ted and his crew to his hotel for dinner that evening.

A ten course meal was prepared for Ted and his volunteers, served in opulent surroundings.  After the soup and salad course, Ted excused himself, stating he would be right back.  After fifteen minutes, Vivian asked one of the male crew members to check on Ted in the men’s room.  The crew member returned telling all at the table that Ted had fallen asleep in the dressing room and could not be roused.  Those left at the table enjoyed a spectacular meal thanks to the generosity of the hotel owner and Ted’s unflagging spirit.

Ted Epstein is the FIRST PERSON IN THE WORLD TO COMPLETE THE GRAND SLAM OF TRIATHLONS, DOUBLE, TRIPLE, QUADRUPLE AND QUINTUPLE IRONMAN TRIATHLONS, ALL IN ONE YEAR PERIOD.. ALL WITHIN SIX MONTHS… (and with a herniated disc surgery between events!)

For fun, Ted Epstein wore his tuxedo at the Denver Marathon in May 1983. He got serious when in 1986 Ted Epstein climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa!

And Ted Epstein ran 480 miles across Siberia in 12 days in July 1989. He was Winner… and only finisher!

In April 1990 and 1991 Ted Epstein ran the Grand Canyon, in one day, South to North Rim, down & up.

On Nov. 7-25th, 1992 Ted Epstein at the at the Deca Ten Ironman Triathlon in Monterrey, Mexico, swam 24 miles, biked 1,120 miles, ran 10 marathons (that’s 252 miles!).

On July 19th, 1993 Swam across Bering Strait, from Russia to Alaska! He is one of two first men in the world to do this: Joe Oakes and Ted Epstein, Jr.

Every weekend for 20 years now, Ted and his running friends, completed an unofficial marathon within Metropolitan Denver. Many life-long friendships developed especially Ted and David Savitz.

Ted Epstein also completed the Stockholm, Sweden Marathon and several more Rim Rock Races in Grand Junction, however, no exact records of such are found.

Rafael Nadal is hoping to win the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the first time.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal laid to rest the demons of his 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals campaign on Monday evening as he came from behind to defeat Andy Roddick 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in his first Group A match at The O2.

However, he noted before the tournament that for him, it would take a greater effort to defeat at least four of the Top 8 players indoors than to win seven matches in a Grand Slam championship. Nadal has qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals six years in a row and peaked with semi-final showings in 2006-2007, losing to Roger Federer on both occasions. He has a 44-26 career record indoors.

“[To] win a match here is very important for me,” said Nadal, who next will face Novak Djokovic on Wednesday evening. “I can play with a little bit more calm the next match. But even if I lose the next match, I’m still going to have chances to be in the semis. So that’s relaxing me a little bit more. Is very positive victory for me and very, very important.”

Playing his first match in five weeks, after a shoulder injury kept him sidelined at the BNP Paribas Masters, Nadal endured a slow start, paying the price for two double faults in his first service game as Roddick quickly opened up a 3-0 lead. Nadal was unable to break down Roddick’s defences, despite two chances to break in the fifth game, and the American went on to secure a one-set lead.

The eighth-seeded Roddick then drew first blood in the second set as he effectively out-maneuvered Nadal to lead 2-1. His lead was short-lived, though, as Nadal immediately struck back courtesy of a rare, wayward forehand from Roddick. In the ensuing tie-break, Nadal’s superior tennis on the clutch points proved decisive as he forced a third set – the first of the tournament so far.

With the bit between his teeth, Nadal broke decisively in the fifth game of the final set and went on to seal his first victory at The O2 in two hours and 34 minutes, loudly cheered by Kylie Minogue, who sat courtside for the encounter.

“I was a little bit lucky tonight,” admitted Nadal. “That’s the truth. But at the same time I started the match a little bit nervous. Five weeks without play. Playing against the best players of the world in the more difficult surface for me, the first match will always be difficult.

“I think I was very close to losing, that’s true. I was in critical situation when I lost my serve [in the second set] because that’s the normal thing. You play against one of the best servers of the world; I wasn’t feeling very well on court. What I can do is try to keep playing with positive attitude, try to play a little bit better, and wait [for] the chance. It happened. For that reason, I am here today for the victory.”

The 24-year-old Nadal improved to a staggering 68-9 match record on the season. He has won seven tour-level titles from eight finals, including three successive majors at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open, making him the youngest player in the Open Era to achieve the career Grand Slam. He will finish the year No. 1 in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings for the second time.

The 28-year-old Roddick was playing on the Centre Court at The O2 for the first time after being forced to miss the prestigious eight-man event last year due to injury. He has qualified for the season finale eight years in a row and reached the semi-finals three times.

In his ninth meeting with the Spaniard, and first since beating him in the Sony Ericsson Open semi-finals in April, Roddick pinpointed the tie-break as being the turning point in the contest. “It hinged on the breaker. The two points I feel won him the match were when he hit two really good second serve returns there in the breaker.

“I thought I played well tonight. I thought I had a game plan. I thought I executed it,” reflected the American, who next will face Tomas Berdych on Wednesday afternoon. “I think the energy was great. It was fun playing tonight. I think it’s the way a [Barclays ATP] World Tour Finals should look. It’s the best atmosphere I’ve played in as far as this event goes.”
