The selection process to determine which city will host Spain's Davis Cup semifinal series against the United States is threatening to turn into a mutiny. The players and team captain are upset that the Spanish tennis federation appears to be ready to overlook home-court advantage in favor of sponsorship money.
Madison Brengle and Wayne Odesnik earned wild-card berths for the French Open by winning U.S. Tennis Association mini-tournaments. The 18-year-old Brengle, a recent Fed Cup team selection, defeated Ahsha Rolle to emerge from an eight-woman field for a USTA wild card into the clay-court Grand Slam tournament, which begins May 25.

Ninth-seeded Richard Gasquet was upset by qualifier Luis Horna 6-4, 6-1 Monday in the opening match of the Rome Masters. The match was tied until the 111th-ranked Horna broke Gasquet late in the first set. The top French player then unraveled, missing 15 forehands and committing 27 unforced errors overall.


John McEnroe won his first Outback Champions Series title Sunday, beating Aaron Krickstein 5-7, 6-3, 10-5 (Champions tiebreak). The 49-year-old McEnroe, playing in his 13th career event on the 30-and-over tour, earned $54,000 with the victory over the 40-year-old Krickstein. Since World TeamTennis began in the 1970s, Billie Jean King often was approached about setting up shop in the nation's capital. Well, in a nearby suburb, anyway. Finally, someone came forward with a plan to put a team right smack dab in the heart of downtown D.C. -- and that made it a perfect fit, as far as King is concerned.


Maria Sharapova pulled out of next week's German Open because of an unspecified injury, and Daniela Hantuchova also withdrew from the clay-court tournament. Sharapova, the Australian Open champion, has not played since losing to Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the Family Circle Cup on April 19.
Third-seeded David Nalbandian rallied to defeat Agustin Calleri 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in an all-Argentine matchup in the second round of the Barcelona Open on Tuesday. Wild-card entrant Mario Ancic beat seventh-seeded Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4. Rafael Nadal, the defending three-time tournament champion who won a fourth straight Monte Carlo Masters title last week, opens against Potito Starace on Wednesday.
Major online gambling companies fended off a legal challenge from French Open organizers who wanted to stop bets on the Grand Slam tournament. A Liege court ruled Tuesday that betting companies like bwin did not violate the rights of the French tennis federation by offering bets on Roland Garros matches.
No Serena. No Venus. No Lindsay. And no spot in the Fed Cup final for the United States. Defending champion Russia advanced to its fourth Fed Cup final in five years, clinching its semifinal match when Vera Zvonareva rallied to defeat Vania King 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday. The Russians will face five-time champion Spain in the Fed Cup final in September.
Sam Querrey was surprised to get past the first round at the Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinals. Now that he's the first American in five years to reach the quarterfinals, he's enjoying the unexpected run. Querrey beat seventh-seeded Richard Gasquet of France 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in Thursday's third round, and faces Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic on Friday for a spot in the semifinals.

Roger Federer beat Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-4 Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters. The 12-time Grand Slam champion overcame an early break against Monfils and looked to have recovered a day after he had to come back from 5-1 down in the third set to beat 137th-ranked Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.


Three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten will not play in next week's ATP event in Barcelona because of a muscle injury. Kuerten, on his farewell tour, received a wild card to play in what would have been his penultimate event before ending his 14-year career at Roland Garros next month. The popular Brazilian with the nickname "Guga" will be sidelined for about a week after injuring his left...

With her three best players missing, U.S. Fed Cup captain Zina Garrison is looking at the semifinal series against Russia as a test. The Americans, who have won a record 17 Fed Cup titles, will be missing Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport when they face the defending champion Russians on indoor clay at the Luzhniki arena.


At this point, Roger Federer will take a title however it comes. The top-ranked Federer ended a long drought, winning the Estoril Open for his first title of 2008 when No. 4-ranked Nikolay Davydenko retired with a left leg injury while trailing 7-6 (5), 1-2 on Sunday. Federer hadn't gone this deep into a season without a tournament win in nine years, causing some to question whether his greatness...
ESPN will televise part of Wimbledon through 2013, agreeing to a six-year contract extension with The All England Club. The network announced Thursday that ESPN2 will air about 100 hours of the tournament each year, including one men's and one women's semifinal. As part of the new deal, ESPN will show matches online.
