With downtown Delray Beach only a few miles from me and a tournament pass in hand, it was time for some tennis! It was too bad neither James Blake nor Mardy Fish could defeat the tall, 18 aces-per-match, Ivo Karlovic at the Delray Beach ATP tennis tournament. I was rooting for the Americans. Conditions at the tournament this year were not ideal with torrential rain interrupting the matches and gusty wind playing havoc with the players’ games. Luckily, there were some friends underneath the Heineken tent. Also, Fish looked really skinny that I didn’t even recognize him. Did he really need to lose so much weight? And what happened to Blake? it seemed like he checked out mentally in his match against Karlovic. I know that playing such a big server can be discouraging but Blake really let it get to him.
Ernests Gulbis didn’t care that it was Karlovic’s birthday and handed him a 6-2, 6-3 beating. At least the Volley Girls kept me interested. Just kidding!
A more entertaining match was the doubles final where Bob and Mike Bryan received their 600th career win against Phillip Marx and Igor Zelenay 6-7 (6), 7-5, (10-4). I would have definitely stayed for a full third set instead of the super tiebreak. As always, I am so impressed with how much energy and how much in sync the Bryan brothers move on the court. It’s like synchronized swimming! Also, watching pro players close up you can really get a sense of how far in front they toss the ball on the serve!
