Amelie Mauresmo has withdrawn from the doubles at Wimbledon after straining her left hip. The 2006 Wimbledon singles champion remains hopeful of playing two-time winner Serena Williams in the third round of the singles Friday after beating Virginia Ruano Pascual in the second round. She had been scheduled to play doubles with Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova, who is seeded fourth in the singles.

Sports - Tennis News Defending champion Venus Williams has overcome a rash of errors and trouble with her serve to beat British player Anne Keothavong and advance to the third round at Wimbledon. Seventh-seeded Williams, bidding for a fifth Wimbledon title, beat Keothavong 7-5, 6-2 in 1 hour, 44 minutes on Thursday. Williams made 26 unforced errors, mostly in the 69-minute first set.

Davenport withdraws due to knee injury (AP)

Yahoo! Sports - Tennis News Former champion Lindsay Davenport withdrew from Wimbledon on Thursday with an injured right knee. The 32-year-old American pulled out before her scheduled second-round match on Court 3 against Argentina’s Gisela Dulko, who advanced to the third round by walkover. Davenport, the 1999 champion, hobbled past Renata Voracova 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in her opening match on Tuesday with her knee heavily taped.
