Roger Federer lost again, this time in one of the biggest tennis upsets in memory. Mardy Fish, an American ranked 98th, shocked No. 1 Federer in straight sets Saturday, with the lopsided score — 6-3, 6-2 — making it even more of a stunner. Sharapova pulls out of Sony Ericsson (AP)

Maria Sharapova pulled out of the Sony Ericsson Open on Saturday, citing a shoulder injury. The No. 5-ranked Sharapova is a two-time finalist at the hard-court tournament. Her withdrawal came a day after her 18-match winning streak ended with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova at Indian Wells, Calif.

Ill Haas forfeits against Federer (AP)

Tommy Haas forfeited his quarterfinal against Roger Federer on Friday at the Pacific Life Open because of a sinus infection. The announcement was made about 2 1/2 hours before the late-afternoon match was to start. Federer, ranked No. 1, is aiming for his fourth title in five years at Indian Wells. On Saturday, he will face the winner of the David Nalbandian-Mardy Fish match.

WTA head reacts to Williams’ comments (AP)

WTA head Larry Scott said Thursday that he strongly disagrees with comments made by Richard Williams, father of Serena and Venus, regarding racism on the women’s tour. WTA to show 8 live finals free on Web (AP)

The WTA Tour will broadcast a free live match on its Web site in select countries this weekend. The women’s professional tour said Thursday it will stream the final at the Pacific Life Open on its Web site, SonyEricssonWTATour.com. It’s the first of eight Tier I tournament finals the WTA plans to stream live.

Former tennis great Monica Seles is working on a memoir. She said in a statement Wednesday that she hopes “to share how I found balance, strength and happiness in my life after a rollercoaster ride of exhilarating accomplishment and sometimes overwhelming tragedy” The book, currently untitled, will be published in 2009 by Avery, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA).

Governing bodies unify replay rules (AP)

All professional tennis tournaments using an electronic replay system will offer players the same amount of challenges per match starting next week. Each player will get a maximum of three unsuccessful challenges per set, plus one wrong challenge in a tiebreaker, the International Tennis Federation said Wednesday in a joint statement with the ATP, WTA Tour and Grand Slam committee.

John McEnroe is still looking for his first Champions Series title. Todd Martin beat McEnroe 6-3, 6-1 Sunday to win The Oliver Group Champions Cup for his third career Champions Series victory. “I thought I was hitting the ball well but missed my chances,” McEnroe said. “I also didn’t get a good handle on break points in the first set.
