Thomas Johansson defeated James Blake 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 Friday to pull Sweden to a 1-1 tie with the United States after the opening singles in the Davis Cup semifinals. Earlier, Andy Roddick beat Joachim Johansson 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-3. Thomas Johansson broke Blake's serve on his second break point to lead 3-1 in the fourth set.

Second-seeded Daniela Hantuchova defeated Anastasia Rodionova 6-2, 6-1 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Sunfeast Open. Hantuchova needed only 57 minutes against Rodionova, setting up a quarterfinal match with eighth-seeded Chan Yungjan. Martin Klizan will meet Lee Hyung-taik in opening singles Friday in the Davis Cup playoff between Slovakia and South Korea. Roger Federer will face Radek Stepanek on Friday in the opening singles match of Switzerland's Davis Cup playoff at the Czech Republic. "What can be better than to start again in the Davis Cup team against world No. 1?" said the 34th-ranked Stepanek, who came out of retirement to help the Czech Republic.
Attendance at the U.S. Open rose 12 percent to a record 715,587 this year, and the tennis tournament's official Web site drew more than 30 million visits for the first time. The event's previous high total attendance was 659,538 in 2005. The U.S. Tennis Association also announced Wednesday that the number of player-challenged line calls increased 40 percent, from 229 in 2006, to 320 this year.
The Davis Cup playoffs are likely to draw as much attention as the semifinals. With participation in next year's World Group on the line, Roger Federer will make his 2007 debut for Switzerland at the Czech Republic.
