Heavy rain cancels play at Bad Gastein (AP)

Kaia Kanepi of Estonia advanced to the second round of the Gastein Ladies on Tuesday by rallying from a break down in the final set to beat Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Seventh-seeded Karin Knapp of Italy also advanced, beating Austria’s Eva Hochby 6-2, 6-3 by converting six of 17 break points.

Defending champ Tursunov wins at Indy (AP)

Sam Querrey beat France’s Julien Benneteau 7-6 (6), 6-1 Monday in the first round of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships. Russian Evgeny Korolev eliminated American Justin Gimelstob 6-2, 6-4; Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina beat Amer Delic of the United States 7-5, 7-6 (5); and Canadian Frank Dancevic eliminated German Benjamin Becker 6-4, 6-3.

Schiavone wins 1st WTA title at Gastein (AP)

Edina Gallovits of Romania upset fifth-seeded Aravane Rezai of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 Monday in the first round of the Gastein Ladies, a new stop on the WTA calendar that is combined with the U-18 European championships. Rezai, the only seeded player in action, broke in the first game and had two more breaks to comfortably win the first set.

Monaco rallies to win Austrian Open (AP)

Luis Horna beat Jeremy Chardy of France 7-5, 6-3 Monday behind a dominant serve to advance to the second round of the Austrian Open. The Peruvian next faces 11th-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain. Diego Hartfield of Argentina, ranked 87th, rallied to defeat No. 283 Martin Fischer of Austria 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 despite double-faulting four times to lose the first set.

TV and Internet Audiences Put Wimbledon Top

Over eight million unique users visited www.wimbledon.org during The Championships – an all-time Slam record and the equivalent of the population of London logging on at least once during the Fortnight.

Davenport set to start comeback Saturday (AP)

Lindsay Davenport’s return to tennis came a long way from the glamorous settings of her Grand Slam victories. Davenport was scheduled to play doubles Saturday night for the Sacramento Capitals in their World TeamTennis match against the Newport Beach Breakers at the Allstate Stadium at the Galleria at Roseville, a parking lot stadium situated next to an upscale suburban mall.

Sharapova among US Open women’s field (AP)

Maria Sharapova and Venus and Serena Williams are among six past U.S. Open champions in the women’s field announced Thursday for this year’s tournament. Defending champion Sharapova, 2000-01 champion Venus Williams and 1999 and 2002 champion Serena Williams are joined by Martina Hingis (1997), Justine Henin (2003) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (2004).

Injured Serena out of Stanford event (AP)

Serena Williams, still hampered by a thumb injury, withdrew from the Bank of the West Classic on Thursday. Williams has withdrawn from three tournaments since injuring her left thumb and calf at Wimbledon. The event at Stanford begins Monday and will feature 20 of the top 50 players. “Even without Serena, the depth of this year’s field is very strong,” said tournament director Adam Barrett.

Nadal wins at Stuttgart despite injury (AP)

Rafael Nadal overcame a right knee injury to win his 90th match in his last 91 attempts on clay, beating Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-3 Thursday to advance to the Mercedes Cup quarterfinals. The second-ranked Spaniard played with a taped knee and leg and was treated courtside after the 37th-ranked German won the first game.

Mueller cruises into Palermo quarters (AP)

Second-seeded Martina Mueller advanced to the quarterfinals of the Palermo International on Wednesday with a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 win over Conchita Martinez Granados. It’s only the second time this year that the 34th-ranked German has won consecutive matches. She will next face local favorite Flavia Pennetta of Italy, who defeated Edina Gallovits of Romania 6-3, 6-1.

Federer, all top 100 men in US Open (AP)

Three-time defending champion Roger Federer heads the men’s field for the U.S. Open announced Wednesday, which includes all of the players ranked in the Top 100. Federer will be trying to become the first man to win this Grand Slam tournament four consecutive times in the Open era — and first with that many in a row since Bill Tilden won six U.S.

Davenport to play doubles on WTA Tour (AP)

Three-time Grand Slam champion Lindsay Davenport will return to the pro tour by playing doubles at the Aug. 17-25 Pilot Pen tournament, a little more than two months after she gave birth to her first child. The 31-year-old Davenport, a former No. 1 who hasn’t competed since September 2006, will play doubles with Lisa Raymond at the hard-court event.

New mom Davenport mulling comeback (AP)

Three-time major champion Lindsay Davenport is considering a comeback after being off the pro tour since the end of last year while awaiting the birth of her first child. “I hope so,” she said Tuesday on a conference call from her Laguna Beach home. “I haven’t made any final decisions. Seventh-seeded Akiko Morigami outlasted Camille Pin 4-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (2) in the first round of the Cincinnati Women’s Open on Monday. Top 2 seeds lose in Palermo semifinals (AP)

Eva Birnerova of the Czech Republic upset top-seeded Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the Palermo International on Monday. Krajicek, coming off her first Grand Slam quarterfinals at Wimbledon, was outplayed on the slower clay by Birnerova, ranked 79 places lower than Krajicek at 111th.
