Rafael Nadal won his first title of the season, defeating top-ranked Roger Federer yet again on clay to claim his fourth consecutive Monte Carlo Masters. The second-ranked Spaniard won 7-5, 7-5 Sunday, and improved his clay-court record over Federer to 7-1. "Winning four times here is unimaginable," said Nadal, who earned his 24th career title.
The United States will play in Goteborg for the Davis Cup semifinals, facing the Swedes in an arena where they twice beat the Americans for the title. Only three women ranked in the top 10 will compete in the first round of the Fed Cup -- and they'll all be playing for Russia. Former U.S. Davis Cup player Taylor Dent had back surgery for the second time in a year and hopes to return to the tennis tour by the end of the summer hard-court circuit. Dent was ranked as high as 21st in 2005, but he hurt his back in early 2006 and had surgery last May, then again March 19. Gael Monfils beat Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina 6-3, 6-4 Monday in the first round of the Valencia Open. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain and Mischa Zverev of Germany also advanced. Garcia-Lopez moved on when Steve Darcis of Belgium retired with a right wrist injury after losing the first set 6-4. Zverev defeated Luis Horna of Peru 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

Serena Williams captured the Family Circle Cup title Sunday, defeating Vera Zvonareva 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 for her first clay court title since the 2002 French Open. Williams' third title of the year was expected to lift her to No. 6 in the rankings. She won earlier in Bangalore and Miami. James Blake appeared to have an edge heading into his first clay-court final. Spaniard Marcel Granollers-Pujol didn't let that phase him, upsetting the American to win the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 Sunday. It was Granollers-Pujol's first tour title. "I feel very, very good," said the 22-year-old Barcelona resident, seeded seventh in the tournament.


Top-seeded Andy Roddick withdrew from the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships on Monday because of a hamstring injury that he aggravated in Davis Cup play last week. Roddick, ranked No. 3, injured his left hamstring while lunging for a shot in a quarterfinal match at the Sony Ericsson Open in Florida late last month and was forced to retire.
The Monte Carlo clay-court tennis tournament dropped its federal suit against the ATP Tour and agreed to forgo the mandatory player commitments other top-tier events require. The change takes effect in 2009, when the ATP unveils a new calendar. Germany beat Belgium in doubles Saturday and qualified for the Davis Cup semifinals with an insurmountable 3-0 lead. Alexander Waske and Michael Kohlmann beat Olivier and Christophe Rochus 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, to lead Germany to its first Davis Cup semifinal in 12 years. Because of Saturday's victory, the reverse singles Sunday won't alter the overall result.
Germany lost both reverse singles matches to Belgium on Sunday, yet advanced to the Davis Cup semifinals with a 3-2 victory. Germany will play Russia in the next round in September, the Germans' first appearance in the Davis Cup semis in a dozen years. The Russians defeated France 3-2 in Moscow in their quarterfinal.
Marat Safin beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-2 in the decisive singles match Sunday to send defending champion Russia past France 3-2 for a spot in the Davis Cup semifinals. Russia will play Germany in the next round in September. Russia won its second title last year against Argentina. France hasn't beaten Russia since 1983.
Sweden, assured a spot in the Davis Cup semifinals, exchanged reverse wins in singles with Argentina on Sunday to complete a 4-1 victory for the Swedes. Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden beat Sebastian Prieto 6-1, 6-2. Juan Martin del Potro defeated Swedish rookie Robert Lindstedt 7-6 (7), 6-4 in the final match.
