Fernando Gonzalez captured his 10th career title and second of the year Sunday at the BMW Open by beating Simone Bolelli of Italy 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-3. The second-seeded Gonzalez wasted two match points while leading 5-4 in the second set in the clay-court match. He went on to win after breaking Bolelli's serve for the first time in the match at 2-2 in the final set.
Five-time Fed Cup champion Spain will host the Czech Republic in the World Group playoffs in July. The International Tennis Federation's playoff draw Wednesday also gave 2001 champion Belgium a home matchup against China. The other matches include Austria against Israel and Japan against Germany. Spain, Belgium, China and Japan all lost 5-0 in the first round earlier this month.
Paul-Henri Mathieu of France beat Albert Montanes of Spain 6-1, 6-1 Sunday to win the Grand Prix Hassan II and end a five-year wait for his third career title. The eighth-seeded Mathieu broke Montanes' serve five times and outclassed his opponent on serve, winning 94 percent of his first-serve points, compared to 59 percent for Montanes.

Sorana Cirstea of Romania upset second-seeded Martina Muller of Germany 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 Thursday in the second round of the Budapest Grand Prix. Fourth-seeded Emily Loit of France, the highest seeded player left, beat Andreja Klepac of Slovenia 7-5, 7-5. Top-seeded Tathiana Garbin of Italy withdrew Wednesday because of a left thigh injury.

Rafael Nadal won his fourth straight Barcelona Open title with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory over second-seeded David Ferrer in the final Sunday. Nadal's 21st straight win at the tournament improved his record to 20-1 in clay court finals, including 4-0 at Barcelona. The second-ranked Spaniard, who has won 103 of his last 104 matches on clay, improved to 25-8 in finals overall.


The United States, Russia, Italy and France reached the semifinals of the Fed Cup on Sunday with two matches to spare. The United States ended up beating Belgium 5-0 to guarantee a spot in the last four, defending champion Italy did the same to China, Russia shut out Spain, and France blanked Japan. Kim Clijsters will not play at the U.S. Open, making Wimbledon the last Grand Slam tournament of her career. The fourth-ranked Belgian will also play doubles at Wimbledon, which starts June 25, in case of an early exit from the singles. "That way, I would be able to stay a bit longer at my last Grand Slam tournament," Clijsters said on her Web site.
With Serena Williams sidelined, Fed Cup teammate Vania King showed she can do more than sing. The 18-year-old King won raves for her rendition of the national anthem to start the weekend, then substituted Sunday for Williams and sealed the U.S. team's victory over Belgium. King beat Kirsten Flipkens 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, giving the Americans an insurmountable 3-0 lead en route to a 5-0 victory.
The two highest-ranked players in the first round of the Fed Cup will play in the opening singles matches for Russia on Saturday. Ninth-ranked Nadia Petrova and fifth-ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova were picked Friday to lead a deep Russian team against Spain on clay at the Luzhniki Indoor arena. Petrova will open against Anabel Medina Garrigues and Kuznetsova, a former U.S.
Serena Williams said the groin injury that forced her to retire from a match last week has healed and she'll be able to play for the U.S. Fed Cup team this weekend against Belgium. This will be Williams' first Fed Cup match 2003. The U.S. team, which also includes Venus Williams for the first time since 2005, will be heavily favored against a Belgian team missing its top two players.
Andy Murray pulled out of the Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday after injuring his back during a doubles match. Murray was playing doubles with brother Jamie on Monday when he felt spasms. "It's better today than it was yesterday, but I still find it hard to walk -- it's a little bit frustrating," Murray said.
Roger Federer is making another push to save the Monte Carlo Masters from being downgraded. The top-ranked Swiss said Monday that the ATP, which is planning to restructure its 2009 calendar, is moving too fast. "Many people are worried, and because they are worried, I think we should just wait for a minute here," Federer said.
The Tennis Channel will nearly double its reach under a multiyear distribution agreement with satellite provider DirecTV announced Monday. "This is a watershed moment," network chairman and CEO Ken Solomon said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. Steffi Graf required three stitches Sunday after husband Andre Agassi inadvertently hit her in the face with his racket during a fundraiser that followed the final of the U.S. Clay Court Championships. Graf and Agassi were holding hands -- her left to his right -- while rallying with a couple of youngsters when Agassi's follow-through struck his wife in the face.
