Roddick, Blake named to Davis Cup team (AP)

Andy Roddick and James Blake were selected Wednesday for the U.S. Davis Cup team that will face Rafael Nadal and Spain on an indoor hardcourt in next month’s quarterfinal. Captain Patrick McEnroe will also go with the world’s top-ranked doubles team of brothers Bob and Mike Bryan for the matches in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Federer visits Woods during practice (AP)

The No. 1 player wasn’t even the most popular in his own group Wednesday, and that was OK with Tiger Woods. Roger Federer came out to watch him play Doral. “It’s pretty neat when you have probably the most dominant athlete on the planet out there in your gallery,” Woods said after his practice round for the CA Championship, where he is the two-time defending champion.

Mauresmo out a month due to appendectomy (AP)

Amelie Mauresmo had an appendectomy and is expected to be sidelined a month. The fourth-ranked Frenchwoman underwent surgery in Paris. She had a stomach ache for several days before a sonogram indicated the need to remove her appendix, her Web site said. “The operation went well and all that’s left for me is to wait patiently,” Mauresmo said.

Blake commits to play Pilot Pen (AP)

Connecticut’s biggest tennis star has committed to playing in the 2007 Pilot Pen. James Blake, who is ranked No. 8 in the world, becomes the first big name to announce he will play in the tournament, which runs Aug. 19-25 at the Connecticut Tennis Center. Blake, of Fairfield, won the tournament in 2005.

French Open to pay men and women equally (AP)

The French Open will award equal prize money to male and female players throughout the tournament, falling in line with the three other Grand Slam tournaments. The announcement Friday by the French Tennis Federation extends last year’s decision. The French Open paid the men’s and women’s singles champions the same for the first time, although the overall prize fund remained larger for men.

Venus to play Family Circle Cup in April (AP)

Venus Williams will play in next month’s Family Circle Cup, the tournament announced Monday. It’s only Williams third appearance at the clay court event. She won the tournament in 2004. Williams joins her sister Serena, as well as former Grand Slam winners Maria Sharapova, Justine Henin, Amelie Mauresmo and Martina Hingis in the event April 9-15.

Teen Querrey moves on at Indian Wells (AP)

California teenager Sam Querrey defeated Belgium’s Christophe Rochus 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the Pacific Life Open on Saturday. Querrey will play fourth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia in the next round. He’s hoping home-court advantage will help. “Hopefully, all my friends will be out there and maybe get into his head,” he said.

Jaeger now focusing on serving God (AP)

A right rib injury forced the fifth-seeded Dementieva to withdraw Wednesday from the tournament that is already missing three of the world’s top five players. Dementieva has a stress fracture that could sideline her for six weeks.

De Villiers takes blame for Blake ruling (AP)

The chairman of the ATP took responsibility for the confusion on a ruling that eventually led to James Blake being removed from last week’s round-robin tournament in Las Vegas. “Personally, I made a mistake,” chairman Etienne de Villiers said Monday at a news conference promoting the Queen’s Club grass court championships.

Queen’s Club to use Hawk-Eye technology (AP)

The Wimbledon warmup tournament at Queen’s Club will use Hawk-Eye technology this year to resolve any line call disputes. The grass-court championships will be the first ATP tournament in Britain to use the video technology, organizers said Monday. “I think it’s great for the fans,” said Andy Roddick, who will again compete in 2007 with Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

Sharapova wins in Qatar to continue roll (AP)

Top-seeded Justine Henin of Belgium won the Qatar Open with a 6-4, 6- 2 win Saturday over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova. The second-ranked Henin won, who won the Dubai Open last week, broke a sequence of Russian domination in Qatar dating back to 2003 when Anastasia Myskina won the title. Murray wins Qatar Open without Gilbert (AP)

Top-seeded Justine Henin of Belgium won the Qatar Open with a 6-4, 6- 2 win Saturday over Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova. The second-ranked Henin won $222,000, her second big paycheck after winning the Dubai Open last week. Henin broke a sequence of Russian domination in Qatar dating back to 2003 when Anastasia Myskina won the title.
