Sixth-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain won the Mexican Open for his fourth career ATP Tour title Saturday night, beating top-seeded David Nalbandian of Argentina 6-1, 7-6 (1). Almagro, 12-1 on the Latin American clay-court swing and 15-3 overall this year, also won the Brazil Open two week ago in Costa do Sauipe.

American Sam Querrey won the Tennis Channel Open for his first ATP title Sunday, rallying to beat South African qualifier Kevin Anderson 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a showdown between towering first-time finalists. The 20-year-old Querrey, coming off a wrist injury that sidelined him early this year, is 6-foot-6 -- an inch shorter than the 21-year-old Anderson.


Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters will not play for Belgium in its Fed Cup match against the United States in April. Both second-ranked Henin and fourth-ranked Clijsters cited a busy schedule, the Belgian tennis federation officially announced on Monday. The governing body of men's tennis applauded Wimbledon's decision to award equal prize money to men and women. Despite sweeping the first set, Llagostera Vives rallied from 4-2 down in the second. "I wanted to be aggressive for the entire match and not give my opponent any chance, not let her breathe," Llagostera Vives said.
David Nalbandian earned his eighth career title, rallying to defeat Jose Acasuso 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 Sunday at the Copa Telmex final. "I'm very happy to win at home," said the 11th-ranked Nalbandian. Lleyton Hewitt pulled out of the ABN Amro tournament with a hamstring injury Tuesday. The seventh-seeded Australian, who won the Rotterdam tournament in 2004, was due to play his opening singles match Wednesday. Hewitt, a former Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion, injured his right hamstring last week at the ATP tournament in Marseille, France.

Steve Darcis sank to his knees, pumped his left fist and let out a yell. What better way for the Belgian to express his disbelief and joy at winning his second ATP title in two finals. He beat Robin Soderling of Sweden 6-3, 7-6 (5) on Sunday in the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and was left almost speechless.


Eleni Daniilidou of Greece upset seventh-seeded Li Na of China while No. 6 Patty Schnyder of Switzerland defeated Italy's Francesca Schiavone in the first round of the Dubai Open on Monday. The 42nd-ranked Daniilidou needed more than three hours to oust Li 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3). Schnyder, the only left-hander in the tournament, struggled in the opening set but prevailed 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3.
