Israel was awarded a Federation Cup match when the Indonesian team forfeited by refusing to play a World Group II playoff in Israel. The International Tennis Federation's Fed Cup committee also will consider sanctions against Indonesia. The ITF said it had received confirmation in writing that Indonesia would not travel to the July 15-16 match in Ramat Hasharon.
After two days of tennis, Daniel Nestor and Mark Knowles just wanted their Wimbledon doubles quarterfinal match against Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry to be over -- one way or another. "It got to the point where (you're thinking), 'Can we arm-wrestle? Or can we do something else just to end this? Play 2-on-2 hoops or something?"' Knowles said Wednesday.
Martina Navratilova is ready to retire. Really. Navratilova, who turns 50 in October, announced Tuesday at Wimbledon that this will be her final year of professional tennis, although she's not exactly sure where she'll play her last tournament. "It's time. It's enough," she said. "I just, you know, want to move on to my next life.
Who could blame Rafael Nadal and Robin Soderling for being a bit sick and tired of each other and, well, Wimbledon as a whole? They did, after all, spend an awful lot of time trying to finish their third-round match, until the No. 2-seeded Nadal finally won 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 4-6, 7-5 Wednesday, more than 90 hours after the pair first stepped on Court 1 to warm up.
Indonesia pulled out of a planned Fed Cup tennis match in Israel to protest that country's actions in the Gaza Strip, a foreign ministry spokesman said Tuesday. Rafael Nadal is getting closer. A year after losing the Wimbledon final to Roger Federer in four sets, the second-seeded Spaniard pushed Federer to the full five Sunday before falling 7-6 (7), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2. "He's playing phenomenal tennis," Federer said. "He's definitely improved yet again. "I think last year he came out, nothing to lose, kind of hit hard but didn't know why.
Li Na is piling up wins and text messages at Wimbledon. The 24-year-old former badminton player became the first Chinese player to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, beating 10th-seeded Nicole Vaidisova 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 Monday. In the third round, she beat former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, the same player who knocked Li out of the third round at last month's French Open.

Donald Young had a change of heart about playing junior tennis. The 17-year-old American, the youngest boy to win a junior Grand Slam title, originally said he would only play professional events in 2007. But he reconsidered and is playing in his first junior event of the year at Wimbledon. "Junior Slams are really big," said Young, who beat Dimitris Kleftakos on Friday to reach the semifinals.
