Israel was awarded a Federation Cup match when the Indonesian team forfeited by refusing to play a World Group II playoff in Israel. The International Tennis Federation’s Fed Cup committee also will consider sanctions against Indonesia. The ITF said it had received confirmation in writing that Indonesia would not travel to the July 15-16 match in Ramat Hasharon.

Knowles, Nestor win doubles marathon (AP)

After two days of tennis, Daniel Nestor and Mark Knowles just wanted their Wimbledon doubles quarterfinal match against Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry to be over — one way or another. “It got to the point where (you’re thinking), ‘Can we arm-wrestle? Or can we do something else just to end this? Play 2-on-2 hoops or something?”‘ Knowles said Wednesday.

Martina Navratilova is ready to retire. Really. Navratilova, who turns 50 in October, announced Tuesday at Wimbledon that this will be her final year of professional tennis, although she’s not exactly sure where she’ll play her last tournament. “It’s time. Federer, Nadal know each other well (AP)

All the hype, all the praise — whatever the language — have yet to faze Roger Federer. He listens to the unending stream of adulation, and has a hard time taking it in.

In the third round, she beat former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, the same player who knocked Li out of the third round at last month’s French Open.

Nadal dethrones Federer in five-set epic (AP)

Andre Agassi grabbed his racket bag and headed for the exit. After a few steps, he stopped and turned around, taking time for one last wave to an adoring crowd, one last look at Centre Court. One final farewell to Wimbledon. At least Venus Williams and Andy Roddick know they’ll be back. Agassi didn’t get the ending he’d hoped for in his last tournament at the All England Club, overwhelmed 7-6 (5),…

Robson gives Britain rare singles title (AP)

Some spectators listened on radio headphones. Half of the crowd on one side of Centre Court turned their heads away from the action. Others waited for text messages on their mobile phones. Cheers broke out at the most inappropriate of times. The World Cup intruded on Wimbledon on Saturday, with England’s penalty shootout loss to Portugal managing to distract fans for a good chunk of the first set of…
