Top-seeded Andy Roddick took a methodical 6-4, 6-4 victory over Rik De Voest of South Africa in their first-round match Wednesday at the Countrywide Classic. Andre Agassi, the four-time and defending Los Angeles champion, bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat Swiss qualifier George Bastl 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1 in their night match.

Top-seeded Kim Clijsters held off Jelena Jankovic 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic. Eighth-seeded Filippo Volandri of Italy advanced to the quarterfinals of the Croatia Open on Wednesday, beating Spain’s Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5). Cornet wins first WTA title at Budapest (AP)

Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands beat Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-1 Wednesday to advance to the Budapest Grand Prix quarterfinals. The second-seeded Krajicek, sister of 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek, forced a second-set tiebreaker after trailing by three games. “Clay is quite a difficult surface for me, and I prefer grass or hard-court,” Krajicek said.

Unseeded Zvonareva wins Cincy tournament (AP)

Unseeded Vera Zvonareva completed her sweep of the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open, beating fourth-seeded Katarina Srebotnik 6-2, 6-4 Sunday to win her second tournament of the year. Zvonareva, who opened the week ranked 52nd on the WTA Tour, made taking the title look easy by winning every set during the Tier III tournament.

With Serena Williams and Lindsay Davenport injured, and Venus Williams begging off, Jill Craybas, Jamea Jackson, Vania King and Mashona Washington will play for the United States against Belgium in the Fed Cup semifinals.
